Czechia Plans to Pursue a Social Media Ban for Under-15s, Aims to Implement It This Year
The world seems to be set on banning social media for the underage, even though there’s still no indication that this method actually works in terms of protecting kids. The latest potential member of the band – Czechia.
Czechia’s Prime Minister Andrej Babiš announced his support for a social media ban for under 15-s on Sunday in a video posted across, wait for it, his social media accounts. That’s right, nothing says "social media is dangerous" quite like announcing it on the very platforms you're planning to ban.
The government's already in talks with experts and service providers, and legislation could land sometime this year.
What's Happening in Czechia
Here's what we know so far. Babiš dropped the news in one of his regular Sunday video messages, saying the experts he knows told him social media is "terribly harmful to children" and that the government "must protect our children." He didn't get into specifics about enforcement, age verification, or which platforms would be affected.
Later that same day, Deputy Prime Minister Karel Havlíček appeared on CNN Prima News and went even further. He straight-up called social media "evil" and confirmed the government's seriously considering a ban. If the cabinet moves forward, Havlíček said they'd propose legislation this year. The government's already negotiating with telecom providers and experts on how to make this work.
Of course, the interesting part is that this isn’t without some pretty glaring contradiction. Babiš and his ANO party are some of the most active social media users in Czech politics. They rely on these platforms to communicate with voters. In other words, they’re enforcing a social media ban while the government itself depends on it for political messaging. Sure, the kids might not be able to vote, but it’s the voters who’ll likely have to give up their privacy to continue using these sites. Now how about that?
Privacy Concerns vs. Protection
The situation is that not everyone is on board. ODS MEP Alexandr Vondra pointed out the obvious tension between protecting kids and respecting fundamental privacy rights. And Pirate Party leader Ivan Bartoš warned that a ban like this could effectively kill online anonymity.
The thing that I talked about countless times is that if you want to keep under-15s off social media, you need age verification. And age verification means everyone has to prove who they are, regardless of their age, occupation, and any other factors.
UNICEF has also raised concerns, cautioning that bans might not even work and could backfire. For marginalized or isolated kids, social media can be a genuine lifeline for connection and learning. Cut that off without offering alternatives, and you’re essentially just making things worse, not better.
The Bigger European Picture
The fact that multiple European countries are pursuing this at the same time tells you something. Attitudes toward Big Tech and kids' screen time have shifted hard in the past year. Regulators are done waiting for platforms to self-regulate, and they're moving toward outright prohibitions instead.
On the surface, this idea is great. The way most social media platforms are right now, they’re absolutely not doing kids any good. However, it’s the execution of it that’s so terrible.
Europe is betting that banning kids from social platforms will protect them from harm. And yet, in reality, it’s almost guaranteed to simply push the kids toward less regulated corners of the internet while eroding everyone else's privacy. But the direction's been set, and Czechia's just the latest country to follow it.
One thing's for sure, though. The irony of politicians announcing social media bans on social media isn't lost on anyone. And if they think a few laws are going to stop determined teenagers from finding workarounds, well, they've clearly never met a determined teenager.
Be part of the resistance, quietly.
